2015 Scottish Heat

Finance for the Future Awards Scottish Heat
Sharing the sustainability know-how that exists within Scottish businesses

The Finance for the Future Awards programme launched its first regional heat in Scotland on Tuesday 23 June 2015.

Hosted by the University of Edinburgh Business School and endorsed by ICAS and IEMA, the event was the opportunity for Scottish entrants (who passed the due diligence process) in the SME and Innovative New Idea categories to present their initiatives to a panel of assessors and demonstrate how those resulted in (or have the potential to result in) positive, long-term financial, environmental, social and economic outcomes for their businesses, stakeholders and the wider community. Each presentation lasted ten minutes and was followed by a Q&A session from the panel of assessors.

Paul Adderley, Managing Director, Sustainable Opportunities Solution and Dr Kenneth Amaeshi, Director of  Sustainability Business Initiative, University of Edinburgh Business School assess the entries in the Innovative New Idea category. Nick Blyth, Policy and Engagement Lead, IEMA and David Wood, Executive Director, Technical Policy & Practice Support, ICAS assessed the entries in the SME category.

During the assessors' deliberation, George Cobb, Group Sustainability Accountant at SSE, adressed the audience on the importance of placing sustainability at the heart of decision making.

The keynote speech was then followed by the finalists' announcement by Richard Spencer, ICAEW Head of Sustainability and chair of the event. Edinburgh-based The Gupta Partnership went through in the Innovative New Idea Category; Auchterarder-based building and civil engineering contractors, Castle Group Scotland in the SME category; and The Green Investment Bank, who are head-quartered in Edinburgh, in the Driving Change in Others category.

The three Scottish finalists will be hoping to echo the success of Edinburgh-based eco-packing company, Vegware, who won the SME category in last year’s awards. They will join over twenty other companies from across the UK – and beyond – for the Judging Day on 4 September and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 8 October.

The event was attended by over 70 guests including finance professionals from business and practice as well as students and academics. It was a great opportunity for them to not only learn about the entrants’ initiatives but also connect with peers and celebrate the entrants going through to the final stage of the Awards.
