Bridges Ventures is a fund manager specialising in sustainable and impact investment across health and wellbeing, education and skills, sustainable living and underserved markets. The manager wanted to demonstrate that this investment approach could be sustainable and attract investors more widely.

It was hard for social enterprises to raise funds so the Bridges Social Entrepreneurs Fund was a pioneer fund launched to invest in mission-led organisations with a social purpose at their heart, such as nurseries, domiciliary care, or community transport social enterprises.

Bridges Ventures set out to demonstrate that they could build a sustainable funding stream, and by showing that this was attractive to their specialist investors, they could then grow their market. Developing an ‘impact toolkit’ to help establish and track key impact performance indicators has allowed the scaling up of effective social businesses in a sustainable way, while providing better outcomes for a greater number of beneficiaries.

Charities and social enterprises have been wary of new investment vehicles and it has been a challenge to align the tensions sometimes present in financial and impact incentive structures.
